The physical fitness standards for the hiring process for most agencies, are based on the Cooper Institute testing process.  However, to be “fair” the agencies has excluded several valuable variables to determine the best candidates such age and/or weight, or gender nor do they include several other important exercises like the sit and reach (which measures one’s flexibility). Regardless, officers are held to a higher standard and are expected to be the best of the best professional athletes on the department when it comes to physical fitness.  Along with the original Cooper Institute tests, some agencies have also adopted a program developed by NTOA (national tactical officers association). These are both great programs and different ways to measure the abilities of an officer, but they are only to qualify due to limited time, distance, and ability.  Our officers need to have a program that continues their stability, mobility, speed, awareness, endurance and recovery throughout their careers, as an officer.

This course is designed to increase the body’s ability to stabilize and remain/maintain in a controlled posture and overtime reduce major injuries. It’s a building process from the beginning.  As the days, weeks, months, and years progress, the heat rises, and the amount of time officers in uniform increases.  Muscular imbalances can occur from injuries, injuries can occur from compensation, and the body will break down one section at a time.  This can lead to weaknesses in underused areas of the body, risking potential injury and raising performance issues.

We target mental focus to make decisions, and confidence while decreasing lack of energy, dehydration and unsureness.  We must increase functional strength, core stabilization and flexibility to prepare our body for the heavy loads and endless time it will take on our body in missions and training.
